β€’ The EPDM supplied is slightly larger than the measurements shown to allow for the necessary overhang.

β€’ Elevate EPDM has a life expectancy of 50 years! No more leaky felt!

β€’ Can be complimented with roofing edge trims (sold separately)

Your shed roof kit is suitable for any shed roof, within the size parameters, provided it will be bonded to suitable timber boarding, that is dry & in good condition.

You can find out more in our installation guides, but see below for a summary:

β€’ Lay the EPDM membrane over the surface area of your shed, allowing for the correct overhang. Allow the membrane to rest for at least 30 minutes to allow packing creases to dissipate.

β€’ Fold the EPDM back to expose around half of the roof.

β€’ Using the correct PPE, apply your spray adhesive in an even coat across both the membrane and the exposed timber. Leave to go tacky.

β€’ Roll the membrane into the adhesive and remove trapped air or wrinkles by smoothing with a soft bristle broom or brush.

β€’ Trim excess membrane, leaving approx. 50mm overhang (If using our drip trim, install back plate before trimming EPDM).

β€’ Use the Bond and Seal along the edge of the standard shed edge bead (timber) and sandwich the overhang EPDM membrane to create a seal before fixing with screws or nails.

  • What is EPDM Rubber Membrane?
EPDM is a 100% cured single-ply roofing membrane made of a synthetic rubber ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer. Since 1980, more than 1,000,000,000 square meters of firestone epdm membranes have been successfully installed on commercial, industrial and residential roofs worldwide.
  • Does the rubber have an up and bottom side?
No, there is no difference between the top and bottom of the membrane.
  • How long does EPDM rubber last?
The membrane offers unmatched resistance to UV radiation, ozone, alkali rains and high or low temperatures. Recent studies show that the membrane can have a life expectancy of up to 50 years, even when exposed to sunlight.
  • Is the installation of rubber membrane weather dependant?
Yes, the minimum temperature for application of the adhesives is +5c and the maximum humidity is 80%. If the temperature is likely to drop below freezing during the following 24 hours after application, firestone bonding adhesive should be used instead and/or a protective covering laid over the EPDM to protect it from frosting.
  • Can an EPDM rubber membrane be repaired?
Yes, your EPDM can be easily repaired. Clean the area with Firestone Aerosol Cleaner, Prime the area with QuickPrime Primer & then apply the necessary sized Firestone Flashform. Work in with necessary rollers. For larger areas, you can clean the area and then use spray bonding adhesive to bond another piece of EPDM on top of your existing rubber. You can then use QuickPrime Primer & Firestone Flashform to seal the edges.
  • Can I walk on my EPDM rubber
Yes, the roof can be accessed for periodical maintenance, but take care to ensure no sharp objects (for example with a walkway such as small stones or glass) are attached to the underside of footwear. In case of regular foot traffic, the membrane must be protected with a walkway, e.g., pavers placed on protective rubber feet.
  • Are rubber roofing products safe to use?
All products supplied are safe to use. Instructions for use are labelled on the necessary products. Reasonable use & precaution still applies – use appropriate PPE where applicable, don’t inhale adhesive fumes, keep away from the reach of children & do not get adhesives in eyes etc. Yes, all products are supplied with clear instructions. Sensible precautions should be taken i.e. do not inhale adhesive fumes, do not allow children access to the products etc.
  • Is Rubber EPDM environmentally friendly?
EPDM has been Greenpeace (link) approved! Due its increased life-expectancy, sustainability and recycling options, Greenpeace ranked it as the top performing, low impact flat roofing membrane. Can I use Techno EPDM on top of insulation boards to create a warm roof? We recommend a ply faced insulation board e.g. Kingspan TR31 or similar. Alternatively, you can insulate on top of the decking with foil faced boards, then overboard with OSB or plywood, secured with long screws.
  • Can rubber be installed directly onto other surfaces such as felt or fibreglass?
Whilst technically possible in many situations by cleaning the surface and using spray bonding adhesive, we strongly advise against this. For best results either: Overboard your existing covering (providing existing decking is sound and dry) with 18mm OSB or Ply; or fully strip your existing roof covering and install new 18mm OSB or Ply to your roofing joists,
  • Why does EPDM have chalk marks on it?
During the manufacturing process, chalk is used to stop the rubber membranes sticking together. It should gradually wear off with weathering and will not affect the quality or longevity of your roof. Once your roof is completed and fully cured, you can gently clean your EPDM with warm soapy water.
  • Why does rubber have creases in it?
Sometimes during manufacturing & transport, creases and wrinkles can be created in the rubber. We recommend opening the EPDM out and letting it settle on a flat, clean surface for as long as possible, or at least 30 minutes. A heat gun or hair dryer can be carefully used on particularly creased areas to relax the rubber.
  • Why does EPDM rubber have joins in it?
During manufacturing, the large panels of EPDM rubber are created using vulcanised seams. The material of these seams is homogenous and 100% cured. They will not leak.

We strongly advise reading our Deliveries & Returns information, to fully understand the delivery of your item(s).

To summarise, see below:

Order Processing:

Orders for Flat Roofing Items placed before 12pm midday, are generally processed for dispatch the same day. Orders placed after midday will be processed next day. Orders placed on bank holidays or weekends will be processed the next working day. A member of our team will update you via the contact information provided.

Delivery:

After dispatch, your order will generally be delivered the next working day. Do note, if you order roofing edge trims with your order - these may be delivered separately due to length & courier service guidelines.

The delivery of your items will be carefully packaged, signed off, & will be delivered via a courtier network. We strongly advise being present for delivery to inspect your products & sign delivery notes. Additionally, not all courier service trucks have tail lifts, or pallet trolleys. Please be prepared with the necessary person(s) to take delivery of your items, necessary for the size of the order. Depending on the size of EPDM kit ordered, it may be heavy - use proper lifting technique, we cannot be held liable for any personal injury resulting from the delivery or use of the ordered items.

Notes on the delivery of Elevate EPDM:

Your EPDM kit will be delivered rolled up for ease of transport. As a result there may be some fold creases and wrinkles - this is normal. To remedy this, the EPDM should be laid to rest, or settle, for a minimum of 1 hour. In colder temperatures, the light use of a heat gun (not a naked flame) can be used to settle the rubber. Don't overheat or touch directly.

Starting your project:

We advise not booking in or arranging an installation team to begin works before the goods have been delivered & inspected. Delays or order mistakes are rare, but can happen. We can't be liable for any costs as a result from delayed or incorrect delivery or items.
