Roofing Edge Trims - Gutter

Your gutter edge trim is installed before any kerb trims on your roof.

Step 1: Before laying your EPDM membrane, identify where water will run off the roof. This is your gutter edge.

Step 2: Selecting your backplate first, place flat on the deck and prefix your fastenings approx. 500mm apart, starting from one side. This will aid installation. Don’t do this on top of your rubber and screw through it!

Step 3: Place your backplate into position, just shy of being flush with your top deck to ensure water run-off. Secure into position.

Step 4: Now your back plate is fitted, follow the steps in Laying your membrane. You can now trim your EPDM, making sure 50mm is overhanging your backplate.

Bonus tip: Don’t trim your EDPM before fitting your backplate, as it will make it too short. Our installers use the bottom insert groove on the backplate once in position to guide the overhang cut.

Step 5: Your front drip plate can now be fitted! This traps your EPDM in between the back and front plate.

The top of your drip plate underhooks at the top of your back plate & once tapped, the bottom will clip into position.

Bonus tip: Use a rubber mallet, the palm of your hand or a hammer across a piece of wood to avoid damaging your front plate. Don’t strike directly or too hard, especially in colder temperatures.

Step 6: Fitting any corners: If your gutter edge meets a kerb edge, once your kerb has been installed, the kerb corner (once slid into position), will cover the open drop edge.

If your gutter edge continues around an internal or external corner, you have a couple of options. Firstly, you could mitre the trims at 45 degrees (internal or external) to butt up neatly & apply Bond & Seal 

Or you could trim down an external corner, apply foam tape/Bond & Seal & secure in place, bond caps into the open edges.

Extra Step 7: Depending on the size of your EPDM, you may have one or more natural seam joints which have been cured during the manufacturing process. This results in the EPDM being slightly thicker here & when clipping in your drip plate, it will need some extra encouragement. 

To stop this popping out in the future, our installation team fixes a Delux fastening or colour coded Polytop pin in the centre face of the drip plate.

Extra Step 8: When you have more than one gutter trip in a row, allow a 5mm expansion joint. To cover this joint and ensure water doesn’t drip down the gap: Cut a 50mm wide drip plate piece, trim the top of the plate down a few mm & trim off the back ‘clip in’ section of the face plate so its flush.

You can then place this over the joint and secure in place with a delux fastening or polytop pin.
